1. Lives Lost - Bob Dotson uses his standup shot in the gym to show the gym were the kids used to play and show the school the kids used to learn. Dotson uses the rule of threes and filling the silence and the non-question/question to get good sound bytes from the kids.

2. Cave Rescue -I like Dotson's open shot in this video because it has good detail and previews video well.

3. Ruby Bridges - He uses Setting by taking the video in her old school to show how emotionaly she is conntected to the school. He uses foreshadowing when he states that the school was once her prison in the open. Conflict aplenty in this story with her paretns divorce, faces a mob, father loses a job. He showed how Ruby growed as a character after teaching the six-year-olds and learn the color of your skin does not matter. The conflict is resolved by her understanding that her place in histroy is not quite complete.

4. Pearl Harbor's Untold Story - The ending of this story was very unexpected because the whole video they were talking about the horrible things the US did with the concentration camps but then the 3 men stayed loyal to america and one even honored those who died at Pearl Harbor by crating the memorial.

Rules of Three

Example from Lives Lost: Bob Dotson would ask questions to the kids and then they would answer very briefly and undetailed and he would not respond and stay silent so the kids would elaborate which they did. A more specific example was when he asked the boy what he liked about the girls and they kept ansewering more specifically after each silence.

Tiger Woods Statement Response

This statment was really needed to come out and I really thought that it was good and i increased respect for him after this. I am glad that he adressed the whole story from thanksgiving night upto this point. The speech seemed very emotional and I think that he was remourseful. He also blamed all of the troubles he and his family had to face on himself. After all of this, taking the blame and adressing all of the points , ithink it was a good step in the right direction!

USA Today Article -- Newspapers

I think this is terrible that the newspapers are losing interest in the public but it is just a downfall of the modernization of our society. People these days are wanting their news faster and easier so they are losing to the competition of both TV and the Internet. I think the tradition of the newspaper is to important to american history to completely destroy the newspapers and if that happened it would be a shame. It looks like the future is not looking to bright for the newspaper industry and it ill be tough for them to turn it around now.

Chapter 3 - "The News"

What Is the News?
~ The News is an account of events that interest aned concern the public.

List and Describe the Six Criteria That Is Newsworthiness
  1. Unusualness - The diifferent, the unusual, the out-of-the ordinary, but the unusual is more often found in bad news. An example is a plane crashing into a building.
  2. Significance - Important events, ones that affect many people are news. Some examples are taxes, elections, was, scientific discoveries.
  3. Timeliness - People want to hear about what is happening now, not what happened a month ago. An example would be floods or other natural disasters.
  4. Proximity - People want to know about near by events. An example would be problems in local school, local sports, new state law, regional highway.
  5. Prominence - News on well-known people are more interesting then reporting the same news on an average joe. An example is the Tiger Woods Saga.
  6. Human Interest - A story with emotional and personal appeal that draws our attention. An example would be heart warming stories or dramatic heart wrenching stories.

What are the five differences between print journalism and broadcast Journalism

  1. Newspapers provide fuller coverage of more stories.
  2. Readers act as their own editors.
  3. Easier to store print.
  4. Readers get to pick and choose what they want to read.
  5. Broadcast provides more drama.

CNN Article

Inside the Recruitment of Sentreal Henderson, Nations Top O-Lineman

I Choose this article because Sentreal Henderson is from Cretin Derham Hall and was narrowing his top choices to USC, OSU and University of Minnesota. I was closely following his recruitment adventures closely with every coach in the country wanting him it was very hectic to follow. I was very upset reading this article though because i wanted him to commit to U of MN becasue he would have been a step in the right direction for the football program. It was very interesting reading about who anxious everybody in his family and all the coaches were because he did not tell anyone his decesion until he revealed it on national TV.

Define Broadcast Journalism

My Definition: Broadcast Journalism is the process in which people involved with the media give breaking news stories to the public through either the radio or the Television. The breaking news stories range from sports to medicine outbreaks to latest society happenings.

Actual Definition: Airing news/current events instantaneously through TV, radio or internet.

Make the NCAA Tournament Bigger? Timeout, Some Say

I do not like the idea of the NCAA March Madness tournament expanding as do many other critics. Most people believe that the NCAA wants to expand the tournament to increase the games played and shown on TV then which would result in an increase of revenue, and i agree with this teory. Also if they expanded the tournament i think that it would ruin the tournament because it is a huge honor to be selected into the tournament and if they let more in it wouldn't be as much as an accomplishment. So i agree with the writter of the article in keeping the same size of the NCAA Tournament. I also believe they should apply their time they are wasting on expanding the tournament to applying tournament concept to the NCAA football post-season instead.

Getting to Know Activity - Sophie Running
